Very interesting and thought-provoking! Age-verification will always be a problem for any online community, unfortunately, which is exactly why parents have to be hyper-aware.

Susie, WELCOME!

Profile Information

About Me:
My "official" bio:

As Metaverse Mod Squad's Moderator Manager, Susie is responsible for vision, management, training, development, and resolution with all of Metaverse Mod Squad's moderators and employees.

Susie is a pioneer in the online community world. Back in 1994, CNN instituted a new form of expression for their viewers called TalkBack Live, hosted on a then ground-breaking computer network called CompuServe. In 1994, Susie began her career as a systems operator, facilitating TalkBack Live Forum. She then was instrumental in moving CNN's chat room over to the "World Wide Web" in 1997. With that impressive beginning, Susie has continued to make history in online communities, hosting the first ever live chat with a sitting U.S. President, hosting chats with every major political figure in the United States, guiding America through the tragedy of 9/11 and hosting online events for three presidential elections. Susie's level head and cool wit has since attracted companies such as Newt Gingrich's American Solutions, Gossip Girl, Court TV, The WB, The CW, Harry Potter, NASCAR, and Warner Brothers.

My "unofficial" bio:

I'm a wife to one, a mother to four, and the primary human for Rufus Bighead, the Very Fat Doggy, and Shirley Goodness and Mercy, the two kittiots.

Fun With Jesse Jackson

After hitting a wall of “blank” here, unable to think of a single topic, it was suggested to me that maybe I should just tell some stories drawn from my experiences online. I guess I’ll do that…. Anyone who knows me knows that I can weave a story from just about anything. :-)

So, here’s a story.

It was 1999. You may remember the story in the news about a fight i… Continue

Top 8 workarounds of kid virtual-world users

It stands to reason that bullying happens in kids' virtual worlds (e.g., Club Penguin, Webkinz, Neopets, Nicktropolis, etc.), because, well, it happens in school, instant messaging, and social-networking sites. But I hadn't learned how it happened until Sharon Duke Estroff called me about it. The Atlanta-ba… Continue

Kid-on-Kid Warfare

Do you remember the way children in school tortured each other? Do you remember the teasing, harassment, and just downright MEANness? I remember being teased about being shorter than most of the others, and about my last name. I'm ashamed to admit that I also did a fair amount of mean things to others.

What kept things from really getting out of hand at school? Usually it was the presence of teachers, and the threat of a trip to the principal's office. Back then, the trip to the office might ha… Continue
